Radiant Earth Foundation is hosting an international expert workshop to discuss how best to use machine learning (ML) techniques on NASA’s Earth Observation (EO) data and address environmental challenges. In particular, generation and usage of training datasets for ML applications using EO will be discussed. Participants of the workshop will evaluate recent advancements, identify existing obstacles and develop a best practices guideline to enhance the adoption of these techniques.

Murali Gumma leads the RS-GIS unit, and conducts research in spatial aspects of agricultural research providing spatial dimension to almost all the components of agriculture. Prior to this he was a Remote Sensing Specialist and Post-doctoral fellow at IRRI. Before that he was a project scientist at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). Gumma has 16+ years’ experience working as a well-recognized international expert in remote sensing and geographic information systems (RS/GIS) and their application to agriculture, wetlands, river basin management, natural resource management, water resources, forests, sustainable development, and environmental studies. His work experience spans over 16 countries spread across Asia and Africa. Currently, he is working on 4 projects: a) Seasonally updated information on dryland cereals and legumes agro-ecologies using innovative remote-sensing and mapping systems, b) Characterization of abiotic and biotic stresses in major dryland cereals growing areas, c) Develop the spatial model for selecting the best sites for legume cultivation in the rice-fallow agro ecosystems using multi-resolution remote sensing and GIS spatial modeling, d) To estimate the area of adoption of legumes and of short duration varieties (for drought avoidance) and e) Impact assessment.
